COLDSTORE

Sierra Nevada, California — Blizzard

Deep in the Sierra Nevada, a cold-storage archive keeps the recorded nights of a sleeping continent. Its facade has no windows but one. When a blizzard comes over the pass, the blue light from the long slot at its base fills the storm, and from the valley the whole mountain seems lit from within.

The memory

I kept the archive for eleven winters. Most of the job is listening.

The drives sleep at forty below, in halls I walked once a month. My room was the one window you can see from the valley, high on the face, above the slot where the blue light leaks out. In a blizzard that light has nowhere to go. It fills the snow until the air itself turns blue, and the mountain looks like a lamp someone forgot to switch off.

Every night the network sent its recordings down the line to be kept: rain on a platform in Utah, a ship breathing in a harbour, surf under a cliff at Big Sur. Before they went into the cold, I played each one once. That was the rule. Someone should hear a night before it is stored.

I'd lie on the cot with the heater ticking and let a stranger's night fill the room. Outside, the storm moved along the concrete like a hand along a wall. I never met the people in those recordings. I knew their weather better than my own.

What I remember most is the quiet after the fans slowed, the blue on the ceiling, and falling asleep before the recording ended.
