The future we were promised

There was a future we were all shown as children, and almost none of us got to live in it.

It was in the books at the school library, on the covers of old magazines, in the corner of a cereal box. The year 2000 had gardens on every rooftop. Trains slid between towers without a sound. Cities floated above the weather, and the people in them were never in a hurry. Nobody in those pictures was checking a phone. Nobody looked tired.

That future never arrived. What arrived was faster, louder and smaller than the drawings. But the feeling those pictures gave us never really left. You can still find it if you know where to look: a long train ride at dusk, a room on a high floor with the lights of a city below, the sound of rain on a window when you have nowhere else to be.

cyberwaves.fm is a radio station from that future. Not the one we got. The one we were promised.

A world you can visit every night

Every broadcast takes place somewhere in that world. A room on the 212th floor where the rain never stops. A cabin on a night skyship, its window perfectly round. A harbor in the clouds where white ships carry the mail. A garden on the moon.

Together they make an atlas: twelve regions and one hundred and forty-four places, discovered one night at a time. Each broadcast is one place, one weather, one long quiet stay. You do not need to do anything there. You only need to stay.

Why the future feels like rest

There is a reason so many of us find calm in these old visions of tomorrow. They were drawn by people who imagined that technology would give us time back, that the machines would do the hurrying so we would not have to. Looking at them now, we do not see gadgets. We see a pace of life.

That is what we keep here. Long, uninterrupted broadcasts made for the hours you need them: to focus while the sun is up, to read, to drift, and, when it rains, to fall asleep.

How to listen

A new place opens every evening at 8:00 PM Eastern on YouTube. Follow the journey from the first room on the 212th floor to the great monolith in the pink fog, where everything begins again.

The future we were promised is still here. It just broadcasts at night.
