Why rain sounds like safety
Rain is the one sound that tells you there is nothing left to do.
Outside, the world is busy getting wet. Plans are cancelled, streets go quiet, the city lowers its voice. Inside, you are warm, the lamp is on, and for once nobody expects anything from you. Your body understands this long before you do.
Millions of people press play on rain every night. Not music, not a story: just rain on a window, for hours. Here is why it works so well, and why every night here has its own.
A sound with no surprises
Most sounds ask for attention. A voice, a melody, a car horn: each one says listen to me. Rain does the opposite. It is made of thousands of tiny, similar sounds, none more important than another, arriving at no particular rhythm. There is nothing to follow and nothing to wait for. After a few minutes it stops being something you hear and becomes the room itself.
That steadiness is also why rain covers the small noises of the night so well: a neighbour's door, a passing car, the hum of a refrigerator. The world outside gets softer, and the quiet inside gets larger.
Shelter is part of the sound
Rain on its own is weather. Rain on a window is shelter. The difference is the glass between you and the storm.
That is why our broadcasts always place you somewhere: a room on a high floor, a cabin on a night train, a bed facing a round window over a sea of clouds. You hear the rain the way you would hear it from inside: heavy on the glass, softer on the roof, a little thunder very far away. You are close to the weather, but it cannot reach you.
Every night, its own rain
Each broadcast has its own bed of rain, its own distant thunder and its own wind, so no two nights sound exactly the same, the way no two storms do. We keep it long and unbroken, with no music, no voices and no sudden sounds, so you can leave it on until morning.
How to use it
- Start it before you are tired, so the room is already full of rain when you get into bed.
- Keep the volume low, just above the quiet of the room.
- Let it play all night. The broadcasts are long on purpose.
Tonight there is a new place, and it is raining there. New broadcasts every evening at 8:00 PM Eastern on YouTube.
